Sales tax built modern Cerritos. Los Cerritos Center opened in 1971, and the Cerritos Auto Square, begun in 1980 beside the 605 freeway, gathered more than two dozen dealerships in one district and bills itself as the largest auto mall in the world. The revenue has paid for parks, a sculpture garden and other public amenities unusual for a city of its size.
